Early Video on the Emancipation of Women, 1890-1930
London 1896 – street scene showing traffic. Narrator states “News cameramen in those early days dashed to record all kinds of events.” Man with a stills camera rushes towards the newsreel camera to get in position to take a photograph of people alighting from a car. High angle shot of a parade of nurses, an animated circle is used to emphasise the fact that a cameraman is seen in the foreground of the shot. “Thanks to them and their hand operated cameras we do have coverage of some aspects of history in the early 20th century.” A holiday crowd is filmed by an early cameraman and the narrator points out that although the men clown around for the benefit of the camera, “the women in the picture seem more passive, more subdued.” The narrator asks a rhetorical question about what women’s lives were like in the 1890s. An unidentified speaker relates how women were expected to be feminine. Narrator states the aim of this documentary – to use archive film to trace the struggle for women’s rights and to show how womens’ lives were reshaped by the end of the 1920s.

A 1937 Map Of Segregated Durham

A 1937 Map Of Segregated Durham

A fascinating example of how racism was officially inscribed earlier in U.S. history — a map created by the city government of Durham in which all geography and locations are racialized. Imagine needing such a map for the purpose of decoding what locations could be accessed by whom. Via Sociological Images:

Trudi Abel, who directs the Digital Durham Project at Duke University, sent [this] in. Created by the Department of Public works in Durham, NC, in 1937, the map illustrates the legal and taken-for-granted racial segregation of the time. The map indicates which parks and residential areas were for Whites and which for African Americans.

Extraordinary footage from a 1920 silent film which historians feared had been lost forever has been brought back to life.

The film, called The Daughter Of Dawn, was shot in the Wichita Mountains of south west Oklahoma in July 1920 and used an all-American Indian cast.

However, the footage had not been seen since it was screened more than 90 years ago in October 1920, at the College Theater in Los Angeles.

The Most Evil Women In History – Bloody Mary Tudor (part1/3)

16 Jul

Mary was the only child of Henry VIII and Catherine of Aragon to live past infancy. Crowned after the death of Edward VI and the removal of The Nine Days Queen-Lady Jane Grey, Mary is chiefly remembered for temporarily and violently returning England to Catholicism. Many prominent Protestants were executed for their beliefs leading to the moniker Bloody Mary. Fearing the gallows a further 800 Protestants left the country, unable to return until her death.

ON THIS DAY IN HISTORY: The Death of John F. Kennedy Jr.

16 Jul

“On July 16, 1999, John F. Kennedy, Jr.; his wife, Carolyn Bessette Kennedy; and her sister, Lauren Bessette, die when the single-engine plane that Kennedy was piloting crashes into the Atlantic Ocean near Martha’s Vineyard, Massachusetts.

John Fitzgerald Kennedy, Jr., was born on November 25, 1960, just a few weeks after his father and namesake was elected the 35th president of the United States. On his third birthday, “John-John” attended the funeral of his assassinated father and was photographed saluting his father’s coffin in a famous and searing image. Along with his sister, Caroline, he was raised in Manhattan by his mother, Jacqueline. After graduating from Brown University and a very brief acting stint, he attended New York University Law School. He passed the bar on his third try and worked in New York as an assistant district attorney, winning all six of his cases. In 1995, he founded the political magazine George, which grew to have a circulation of more than 400,000. Unlike many others in his famous family, he never sought public office himself.” History.com
